Repost @wendyredal: On a field tour exploring envi $Repost @wendyredal: On a field tour exploring environmental justice issues on Colorado’s northern plains, we met Patricia Nelson and her son Diego. Patricia is a parent activist trying to protect the health and safety of Diego, a second grader, and his peers at Bella Romero Academy, a public school in Greeley, CO where a majority of students are from low-income families, mostly Latino and immigrant/refugees who have been resettled in the area and often work in agriculture, meatpacking and the oil and gas industries. Extraction Oil & Gas recently built a 24-well fracking operation less than 700 feet from the school’s playground and soccer fields. Legal challenges to the permits have been in favor of the operation and were upheld again in June of this year, though Nelson continues to spearhead efforts to educate the community and others, like SEJ journalists, about the risks of fracking sites proposed near other schools and residential areas where residents may not have the resources, language ability or confidence to fight back. During a poignant moment, she choked up as she recounted the experiences of children in the community swimming pool this past summer, located the equivalent of four city blocks away from the fracking site—sudden nosebleeds and burning eyes during the “flowback” phase of the extraction process. #sej2019 #Environmentaljustice$

#Repost @wendyredal: Learning about meat production on Colorado’s high plains during the Society of Environmental Journalists annual conference. Visited Five Rivers feedlot in Kersey, one of 11 owned by the company, which is the country’s largest cattle feeding/finishing operation. These holding pens, which cover 700 acres, are home to 90,000+ cattle, out of nearly a million company-wide. They arrive here to spend about 6 months fattening up on grain before going to slaughter at the JBS meatpacking plant in nearby Greeley. The animals with a “CHIN” tag in their ear are bound for China. Lots at play in this industry, including the carbon footprint of beef production, environmental advances in collecting and treating runoff from these feeding pens, employing microscopic wasps to eat fly larvae, daunting and unethical working conditions for the largely immigrant labor force at the processing plant, and the global role of JBS, the Brazilian mega-corporation with $50 billion in sales annually. #sej2019 #foodpolitics
