Who can apply?

U.S. domestic traveler and membership with SEJ and/or any of the following affinity organizations:

• Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association
• Asian American Journalists Association
• Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists
• Disabled Journalists Association
• Indigenous Journalists Association
• Military Veterans in Journalism
• National Association of Black Journalists
• National Association of Hispanic Journalists
• South Asian Journalists Association
• The Uproot Project
• Trans Journalists Association

When is the deadline to apply?

Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Applicants are encouraged to apply early. Non-awardees in Round 1 will be considered for Round 2.

What can the stipends be used for?

Stipends can be used towards #SEJ2025 registration, travel, lodging and meals otherwise not provided by the conference and affiliated events.

How much would I receive?

The exact award amount will be determined based on the total number of applicants and those with the most financial needs.

How do you decide who will receive a stipend?

We will be prioritizing applicants who are members of an affinity journalism organization listed above and those with experiences and identities often underrepresented at professional conferences.

When will selected applicants be notified?

Applicants are encouraged to apply early (prior to the March 14 deadline). Non-awardees in Round 1 will be considered for Round 2.

Round 1 Awardees notified: Friday, March 7
Round 2 Awardees notified: Friday, March 28

If selected, when and how would I receive the stipend?

Stipends will be released on a rolling basis, as a mix of reimbursement and lump sum, depending on the number of applicants and budget. SEJ uses Bill.com to process payments and reimbursements.

I’ve already registered for the conference. If I receive a stipend, can I be reimbursed?

Yes, if you request registration support and are awarded a stipend after you’ve already paid, then your fee will be refunded.

This program was generously funded by the MacArthur Foundation, Walton Family Foundation and individual donors to SEJ.
